106.3 …

January 21, 2008

In Summation won todays G2 stakes at Santa Anita covering 6F in 106.3. Anyone else think that is too fast? I mean, I realize these are good horses, but 106.3? Of course it was a track record, it has to be close to the world record. Obviously we have a lot to learn about these synthetic surfaces after this debacle at Santa Anita and drastic biases seen at Keeneland and Del Mar.

Laurel Park – 1-21 …

January 21, 2008

Looks like an OK card betting wise today. We’ll give it a whirl.

We’ll go in assuming the track is playing fair, but I’d watch the first few races very closely to see if a certain running style is best.

 Race 1 – 1 mile – 3Yo MDN 16000

#1 – #5 – #9 – #3

Going to allow myself 4 selections in here because #3 Court Band is going ( unless I’m missing something ) to be a huge price. #1 Ferrous is the co-morning line favorite at 5-2. I don’t think you will get that price. He is my top choice dropping in for 16k from 25k and making his 3rd start of his form cycle. He had a brutal trip in his latest, going head to head through  23.2 and 46.3 opening fractions going a mile while hung out two wide. Speed is an asset the majority of the time going this distance as is the rail and his prior race would trounce these. Ferris goes to Napravnik so all seems well. #9 Lord Willing draws a tough post after racing from a tougher post in his last. He made a nice 5 wide move and ran on well for 2nd. Pino takes the reins again and he should make a run. #5 Bimini Bay comes out of the same race Lord Willing. He made the same type of move, just not as wide and ran 4th. Beaten favorite in his last 3 likes to burn money. #3 Court Band is going to go off too big a price for me not to mention, he may run last, but if he doesn’t he could help the exotics pay a nice number. Makes his 2nd start of the form cycle after running an even 5th in a quickly run race against a bit tougher. His first two career starts were non-efforts, but that latest showed me some signs of life.

Golden Yank – Delta Jackpot

January 18, 2008

Just read on DRF.com that the owners and trainer of Golden Yank, the 3rd place finisher in the Delta Jackpot stakes that was run a few months ago have filed a lawsuit agains the LA Racing Commision. They are claiming that both Z Humor and Turf War, the 1st and 2nd place finishers that dead heated for the win, interferred with Golden Yank and that the interference warranted a disqualification of one, or both of those horses.

I saw the race live and was undecided as to whether any action should have been taken. I felt that it could have been argued either way, though I was leaning towards no action. I was unable to find a replay on the internet.

I feel that both the owner and the trainer have taken this a bit far. They appealed it to the LA racing commision and lost that appeal in an unaminous decision. So the race has been ruled the same way twice. It happens in racing. I can see what they are trying to do here, they probably realize the horse is questionable as far as a graded stakes competitor which is going to make it tough for him to earn the necassary graded stakes earnings to make the Kentuck Derby field. Being placed first or second here would really boost the horses graded earnings and give him a much better chance to make the field even when he may not deserve it.

Take your medicine, I’m sure it happens to everyone involved.

Panaramic Art …

January 18, 2008

This pacer just won his 17th in row, 6 of which of come at the Meadowlands. 28 wins in 34 lifetime starts and he’s been in the exacta in 33 or 34. Smallest margin of victory in his last 10 starts is 1 1/4 lengths. Watching him live on the track is even more impressive than his record, last weeks ( 1-11-08 — Race 11 at the Meadowlands if you want to watch a replay ) backside brush to the lead was breathtaking.

Bred in Iowa, trained by Albert Meyer, driven by George Brennan and owned by Squak Box Stable LLC & Keep the Dream Going Inc.  The dream does seem to be keeping on, they purchased this horse for $60000 and he has earned over $82000 in his last 6 starts. That doesn’t count tonights win or the other 4 he has earned for these owners.

Laurel thoughts 1-18 …

January 18, 2008

Race 1 – #2 – #7

Looks like atleast half the field would like to have the front end. I think #2 Aseeninvogue will win that battle with the others. Comes into the race with the best form on paper and should be able to outlast the others. I think #7 Cadillac ofthe Sky might be best on the front end, but he has rated to victory in the past and gets a nice attack post here.

Race 2 – #3 – #5 – #6

Looks like quite a few of these are going in the wrong direction or are already there. I like #3 Dr. Pamela to make the lead here and never look back. Lots of speed in her last and she couldn’t get to the front from the outside post. Back inside here and not much speed to contend with outside of #4 but I think #3 is quicker. #5 Ad Muster and #6 Three Shots all can be running late and don’t seem to be headed in  a bad direction.

Race 4 – #1 – #3 – #7

Not much to say here. Bad race. The only horse that really interest me is #3 Senorita Toni Mae. She was 121-1 in her latest and really ran a credible race being hung wide the whole way to only be beaten 4 lengths by the winner and less by the horses that may go favored here. Has a chance to blow up the tote board.

Race 5 – #9

Not sure how you look past #9 Edger in here. Looks like a standout.

Race 6 – #6

#6 Something Dixie goes out for the 2nd time in her career for Trombetta/Caraballo. Took money in debut and I expect improvement.

Race 8 – #6

#6 One Man To Beat has the speed to get himself a nice tracking trip in here. #5 Blew Me Away is he obvious threat.

If the track is listed good today it may play to the off pace types. Not sure what the temp is but the rail could be good or bad depending upon the weather. I’d tread lightly regardless due to the quality of racing but I’d also watch the first couple closely.

Good Luck.

Previous play investment = $50

Previous play return = $0

Starting Bankroll = $1000

Bankroll as of previous play = $1305

New Bankroll = $1255

We’ll head back to sunny Florida for today’s play of the day and we’ll get it over with early.

Race 1 is an open 12500 claimer going 6F over the main track. Interesting race with horses dropping in class from tougher claimers and starter races and the likely first or second choice going out for a new barn.

Our play in here is #2 Zafin. Zafin takes a slight drop in class from 18000 to 12500 and has faced tougher much of the past year. He moves inside to post #2 after breaking from post 11 in his latest and being hung 3 wide while on the pace around the turn. M. Pino calls on Bravo, a rider he has called on with success when he shipped into the NJ circuit. 3-1 second choice on the morning line looks like a solid play of the day.

Play of the day:

 Race 1 Gulfstream Park 12500 claimer 6F

$50 to win on #2 Zafin

Commentator …

January 17, 2008

Just watched this guy blitz the Gulfstream Park oval in a track record time of 133.71. Was his first effort after a dull 7th in the BC Sprint. He is absolutely brilliant when he is right. He must have some nagging problems because for every dazzler he runs he equals it with a dud. He only seems to be able to string two good ones together at most.

Hopefully they can keep this guy together this year and point him to these 1 turn miles that he seems to favor over most other trips.

Another winner yesterday making us two for two and showing a profit of over $300 dollars.

Play of the day stats

Races played = 2

Wins = 2 – 100%

ITM Finishes = 2 – 100%

Previous play investment = $50

Previous play return = $205

Starting Bankroll = $1000

Bankroll as of previous play = $1150

New Bankroll = $1305

We’ll head to bright, sunny and warm Florida for another starter race today at Gulfstream. Race 3 is carded at 1 mile 4+ that have started for less than 10k since April of 07.

#3 Kristali is in great form and his Beyers tower over these. Should be enough speed in here to set up his late run and hurt the chances of those running on and near the pace. Odd’s won’t be much but this guy looks like a solid choice.

The play of the day for 1-17-08:

$50 to win on #3 Kristali

Good luck.
